Weight loss, compliance to nutritional guidelines and vitamin and mineral status a year after bariatric surgeryA quasi-experimental study of the difference between one-off dietetic group counseling and one-off individual counseling.
At the end of 2015, the MC Slotervaart replaced individual consultation in half of the patients with one dietary group treatment 16 weeks after surgery. The aim is to measure the difference in weight loss, compliance with nutritional guidance and vitamin and mineral status one year after bariatric surgery.
68 patients received dietary group guidance and 52 patients were individually supervised. Daily protein intake was measured by dietary history. Starting, preoperative and postoperative weight and biochemical parameters were derived from patient file. Differences between variables (group consult vs individual consult) were tested with an independent sample t-test for continuous variables and a chi-square test for nominal variables.
One year after procedure, mean weight loss from starting weight in the individual supervised group was 34.4% versus 32.8% in patients with group guidance (p = 0.25). Compared to the preoperative weight, there decrease was 29.6% in individually supervised patients and 28.6% in patients receiving group support (p = 0.547). 71.2% of individually supervised patients and 72.1% of patients with group support achieved protein requirement (p = 0.91). There was no difference in number of eating moments (5.68 to 5.71), distraction during eating moments (51.9% versus 64.7%), separation of food and drink (p = 0.87) and vitamin and mineral status. 73.1% (n = 38) of individually supervised patients exercised (3.49 ± 1.95 days / week) compared with 72.1% (n = 49) of the group guidance patients (3.72 ± 1.90).
One year after bariatric surgery there was no difference in weight loss, compliance and vitamin and mineral status between patients with group guidance and patients with individual dietary supervision at the 16 week postoperative intervention.
